How to Pick a Niche Market to Serve as a Personal Trainer

As a personal trainer who is interested in making headway in business, one of the things you will have to do is pick a niche market. Sure, it is possible to offer your services to all and sundry, but a mum looking to lose the post natal weight gain for instance, would rather sign up with a personal trainer who works with other mums like her.

It may be tempting to want to go the jack-of-all-trade way as a personal trainer, catering to all and sundry. But the truth is everyone wants to feel special and no one wants to feel as though they are being lumped in with all the rest. This is why it is really important to choose a niche and stick with it. In choosing a niche market, here are a few things to bear in mind.

Personality

In picking a niche market for your personal trainer business, you need to take your personality into consideration. If you are not the patient type and have a high energy level, it might not be the best decision for you to pick seniors as your niche. Look closely at what the sort of people you have a natural affinity for; are you a mom yourself? Other moms might find it easier to relate with you. Understanding who you are and what kind of personality you have will help you in picking your niche market.

Passion

Where does your passion lie as a personal trainer? Corporate wellness, fitness workouts, or health promotion? That is where your niche most likely resides. If you have a passion for working with kids to get them more fit and healthier, it seems pointless to target pregnant women as your niche market. And that works both ways too. Passion is easily seen in every business but it is especially evident in the personal training business. If you are not passionate about what you are doing, it will come across to your clients. Clients are more likely to refer a personal trainer that is passionate about working with them.

Specialty

Do you have a specialized training in personal fitness? This will also help you to settle on a niche market for your personal training business. For instance, a personal trainer with special training in physiotherapy would do better in targeting injured athletes or accident victims when planning for a niche market.

Location

This is not as crucial as the three above but it is also a factor that could influence your choice of niche market. Your location can tell a great deal about what kind of market is available. If you are living in the suburbs for instance, you are likely to find a good niche in pregnant women, kids, seniors and mums. In other words, you will have a higher chance of success if you target the family related market instead of busy executives for instance.

In choosing a niche market as a personal trainer, try not to be too broad in defining that niche, exercise creativity and go with your passion.
